Today, we’re asking you to consider which earthquake fault line is closest to you. With a number of large earthquakes in the past year which have rocked Christchurch, New Zealand, Japan, Haiti, and Chile, it is not outside the realm of possibility that each of us will experience an earthquake in our lifetimes.

But, do you know which earthquake fault line is closest to you?

TODAY’S TASK IS WORTH 3 POINTS

You will earn one point for finding the fault line closest to you.  And for 2 bonus points, identify the type of earthquake that is likely to do the most damage to you.

  1. Just joining in…
Wasn’t able to find names of faults in SW Washington. The nearest ones I could find online are in the Portland area including the Portland Hills Fault and a few others. Farther north, there are numerous faults in and around the Puget Sound area. Offshore, the closest ones are the Cascadia Subduction Zone and the Juan de Fuca plate. The inland faults are “strike/slip” faults and the offshore ones are subduction zone faults. As to which is “most hazardous” I suppose it depends on the magnitude, depth of the quake and distance combined so not sure I can guess. How I would be affected depends on where I am. I would not want to be in or near bridges or older masonry buildings, or a major gas line, if they were to be damaged by a severe enough quake. I would not want to be close to a shoreline because of potential flooding and liquefaction. This may be way more than you were looking for!

    • Awesome answer, Darcy! Thanks for joining in the game today! You are correct that none of our local SW Washington faults have fun names. Portland has a few that have names like the West Hills faults, but you got the Juan de Fuca and Cascadia faults by name and that is wonderful! Hope you’ll take a few minutes and explore some of the other tasks from earlier in the month!

        • Hi, Darcy….yes, there are many others playing the game, but they are putting their answers into the forms on each day’s tasks. When you read the post, you’ll see a Google Form which collects answers for the game. This helps us in collecting folks answers in a consistent format; although it is a little different than last year when we played. This has been a huge timesaver for game administration although it’s minimizing the comments that are being left here on the blog and on the Facebook Fan Page at http://www.facebook.com/30days30ways or on Twitter. Thanks for sharing your answer here and hope that this makes sense! Have a great week!
