Task 24: The Power of Kindness

Last month I was helping out at a kids’ event and in an effort to catch someone before they walked too far away, I attempted to run. Only I didn’t catch them; instead, I tripped over the root of a tree and despite my wind milling arms and desperate attempt to stay upright, I did a flying slide across the wet dirt, face down. Embarrassing? Oh yes. Dirty? Definitely. The young women at a nearby coffee shop were kind enough to lend me a towel so I could clean myself up. When I thanked them, they looked surprised, and said “Of course!” – they couldn’t imagine not helping.

Showing kindness to others is powerful. Whether it is a bigger thing, such as helping someone through a tough situation, or a simple gesture, like holding a door open, you have an impact on that person, sometimes in ways you never know. As we focus on emergency preparedness this month, we need to remember that the emotional trauma of a disaster has a tremendous impact on our ability to cope with what has happened. Thinking about a situation from the other person’s perspective is important, because while we may see something one way, the other person may see it completely opposite. The ability to listen and be respectful of the other person’s feelings is a good skill to develop. It not only shows kindness and consideration to others, but can also help people cope with a difficult situation.

DAY 24 Challenge:1-3, or 5 pts    Tell us about an act of kindness someone has done for you. How did it make you feel? We then want you to think about one random act you can do as well and do it! Share that with us. How did it make you feel?

Level Up: 5 pts An 11 year old boy started the #ElPasoCHALLENGE after the mass shooting in August. This challenge asked folks to share at least 22 random acts of kindness in memory of those lost in El Paso and Dayton. Look for a way to Pay It Forward. Be creative and have fun with it! Let us know what you did and how the other person reacted, if applicable.
