Day 29: Be 2 Weeks Ready

Featured

Hey Everyone, Eric here with your second to last day challenge…. Depending on what part of the country you live in, you may get a different number if you ask how many days of preparedness items you should have on hand. FEMA talks about a 72 hr kit or 3 days… When I started in this profession we started talking 7-10 days worth of supplies… and where I live in the Pacific Northwest, because we live in an area known for earthquakes, we talks about being 2 weeks ready.

Honestly when I tell someone they should have supplies on hand for two weeks, who may be just getting started it is often overwhelming, so I always tell them.. just start somewhere and start building to your kits as you can. Preparedness is a journey… not a destination!

Today’s challenge is one that is often overlooked in regards to personal preparedness.  Yet it is a very important topic that if not thought about can lead to even a bigger disaster.  We easily think about food and water, but happens to the other side of that equation?  Recently the Portland/Vancouver Metro region came together on a campaign called EmergencyToilet.org to address this topic that even for adults, can be an awkward conversation that usually is handled with many puns.  Today we talk about Pee and Poo and Disaster Sanitation.

DAY 29 Challenge:1-3, or 5 pts    For your Day 29 challenge, we want you to show us what you have in your kit for disaster sanitation.  Not only do we want you to show us what plans you have for pee and poo, we want to know what other sanitation items you keep in your kit and why.

Level Up: 5 pts For today’s level up, we want you to help find solutions to the disaster sanitation issue.  Share with us some tidbit or creative idea you have discovered or come up with to help organize, aid in or help deal with diasaster sanitation.

Day 28: Shake, Shake, EQ

Featured

Hey Everyone, Its Eric from the 30 Days Gang, here with your day 28 challenge. As National Preparedness Month comes to a close, it marks almost the kick-off for shake out month where we practice our earthquake safety. We also want to talk about ShakeAlerts.. the Earthquake Early Warning Systems that have rolled out in the past couple years in some states.

There are two ways to receive the early warning alerts now that the ShakeAlert system is live: The Wireless Emergency Alert system and your phone’s built-in software.

While most phones already have “Emergency Alerts” or “Public Safety” alerts already turned on, we are asking the public to check their mobile phone to see if Wireless Emergency Alerts are turned on.

Click here for more information on how to receive ShakeAlert notifications.

DAY 28 Challenge:1-3, or 5 pts    For today’s challenge, we want you to find the link to your State Shakeout and sign up. We want you to get at least 3 other people to sign up as well. Bonus points if you can get your work signed up!! Share with us the link for your state and let us know you are ready for the Great Shake Out

Level Up: 5 pts For today’s level up we want you to do a little research and find out if you have ShakeAlerts where you live, and let us know you are signed up!

Hey Everyone, Eric from the 30 Days Gang, here with your Day 27 Challenge.

Wow… This world just seems so angry these days…. people have cut off family and friends who have difference of opinions.. People are mocking folks who think different about face coverings or the COVID vaccine… People just seem to be so much on edge… divided in different camps and just brutally unkind to one another.

We have seen so much hate, name calling and just out right meanness between different camps across this country. There are days I can barely manage to listen to the news … I long for the days of puppies and food posts on Social Media

Level Up: 5 pts For today’s level up, we not only want you to pay it forward somehow… We want you to commit to helping make this world a little better. Featured

Hey there everyone, we are on the final push everyone… you are almost there… just a few more days!! We have had a few challenges this month related to your kits… from your car, to work, to your home kit.. they are all important because we just do not know where we may be when the bad thing happens. But sometimes it’s the unusual that catches our attention and makes us consider something we may have never thought of ourselves.

DAY 26 Challenge:1-3, or 5 pts    Today’s challenge once again is related to your kit… but in a little different way. Today we want to talk about the most unusual item in your kit, and why you have it as part of your preparedness kit. Take a pic or create a short video sharing why you have this item in your kit and why others should consider adding it to theirs as well.

Level Up: 5 pts For today’s Level Up… we want you to take a serious look at your preparedness supplies and let us know how many days you and your household are prepared for. It does not matter if you are just starting and only have a few items or have been a lifetime prepper, it’s important to be honest with ourselves about how long we think we could survive without assistance from the communities we are all part of. Share with us as well your plan to increase your readiness in the next year.

Day 25: iVolunteer

Featured

Hey everyone, Eric here with your Day 25 challenge.

Each year we usually take at least one day to focus on volunteering and giving back to your community. The past year and a half made that a little more difficult but many volunteer programs are rebooting and so its the perfect time for all of us to rethink where and how we volunteer our time and talents.

The important thing is realizing that our communities are stronger when we are involved and find ways to give back more than just our dollars.

DAY 25 Challenge:1-3, or 5 pts    For today’s challenge, we want you to tell us about any volunteering you do to support your community. Share with us why you choose to volunteer where you do. Please share a pic of you volunteering or a video about why you volunteer where you do.

Level Up: 5 pts For today’s level up, here is your chance to help recruit new volunteers for the cause… Create a short video, (2 minutes or less) highlighting volunteer opportunities and why others should join you!

For both of today’s challenges, while we would like to focus more on those organizations that assist public safety, we know they are not for everyone. Feel free to share any legal volunteer activity you are involved with.

Day 23: Your Home Hazard Hunt

Featured

Hey Everyone, Eric from the 30 Days Gang, here with today’s challenge.

If you look at FEMA’s webpage, Ready.gov, one of the first things they tell ya.. is “Make a Kit, Make a Plan” and while I think these are important steps… I think we often overlook an important first piece…. How can you make a kit or make a plan, if you don’t know what hazards you may have in your area? What risks might you face when it comes to an emergency or disaster?

In past years, we always focused on those natural and human caused disasters or emergencies….those catastrophes.. like we see in the disaster movies. But with a global pandemic that’s kept us closer to home and well even locked in our homes for months, we wanted to focus even more where we spend the most of our time… Our Homes… While I felt I was pretty stocked up on supplies to keep me comfortable in my home, it also made me realize we have many hazards around our homes that we often overlook and don’t think about… from an extension chord that had too many things plugged in, to items not secured correctly or placed in a bad location that would hinder me during an earthquake.

DAY 23 Challenge:1-3, or 5 pts    For today’s challenge, we want you you to go on a hazard hunt… in your home. Share with us what you may have found, and actions you can take to minimize or remove those hazards. Take a pic or video to share with others. No shaming here, and you may help someone else make their homes safer.

Level Up: 5 pts For Today’s level up.. we want you to step outside your home, and take a look at the exterior of your home… and the neighborhood around you. What risks or potential hazards are within walking distance of your home? For instance, in my neighborhood, there is a small power transfer station within 3 blocks of my home. Share with us and draw a generic map of your neighborhood to share with us your neighborhood hazards

Day 21: Your #1 Safety Tool

Featured

For many, our cell phones are much more than phones… These days, the little devices we carry with us are a mini computer, camera, calculator, video camera, alarm clock, day planner, and much more all rolled into one.. They have become lifelines to connect with those close to us. Who would have thought back when they were introduced, and started to become popular, technology would be where it is today? I still remember when I got my first bag phone, back in the early 90’s… anyone remember those?

With all the uses these little devices already have in our daily lives, we thought it was a perfect opportunity to add one more… How to make your cell phone your No. 1 safety tool!

I have a back up battery pack on my phone… I carry a back up battery with me all of the time, inside the case I can hide emergency money. I have added contact info to my screensaver. I also have several apps on my phone that provide critical information when I may need it from first aid to a scanner radio app to provide critical info. I have photos and backed up files of important docs regarding my home, and health stored as well as important contacts that can be contacted in case something happens and someone needs to get ahold of my family.

DAY 21 Challenge:1-3, or 5 pts    We want you to share some what makes your phone your No. 1 Safety Tool. Additionally share with us how you will keep it charged if we lose power. Please be generic in your responses to not share any vital information but give broad ideas that might help someone else think of new ways of using their phone as a safety tool.

Level Up: 5 pts For today’s level up, we want you to do some research. We want you to dig a little more, and share apps, and additional ways your phone can be a great safety tool. Provide links or create a video highlighting suggestions to help someone make sure they have info stored safely on their phone in case of an emergency.
