Day 10: We Care About Your Mental Health

Featured

Hey Everyone, Eric here from the 30 Days Gang, bringing you your day 10 challenge.

It seems one thing that has come out of the past year and a half has been the acknowledgement of taking care of yourself mentally. Talking about Mental Health no longer seems to have the same negative stigma it had just a couple short years ago. In fact we have seen positive responses to sports icons who have taken steps to protect themselves instead of pressing on at all costs.

This, I can’t travel, I can’t go to a concert, I can’t workout like I used to, I can’t spend time with friends and family.. this feeling of isolation, that keeps us from connecting with others can certainly wear anyone down if you don’t have a plan.

DAY 10 Challenge:1-3, or 5 pts    For your Day 10 challenge.. tell us what has been the biggest emotional challenge 2020 has handed you…and share how you are coping with it.

Level Up: 5 pts For today’s level up, we know some of you are amazingly creative folks and have come up with some awesome ways to make the best of this year.. not only mentally but ways of coping and helping others.. Share with us what you have done to stay connected with friends and loved ones.

Find Allies:  Recruit friends and family members to play 30 Days, 30 Ways…. Challenge your family, your place of work or school, your place of worship, your neighborhood and your community to take the 30 Days challenge! Day 9: Grow It

Featured

Hey Everyone, Its Eric from the 30 Days Gang, here with your Day 9 Challenge!

One of the biggest revelations over the past year for me was the lack of prep in regards to seeds and growing my own food. I realized that while I grow a garden each year, and freeze and can a little of my own food, I was totally unprepared for having plant starts for each year. I found it difficult to find the plants I was looking for in the normal fashions, as well that made me feel safe.

It got me thinking about if I needed to grow my own food, what would I do? I realized I needed to start thinking about having some seeds on hand and come up with a better plan to starting and growing my own food. Over the past year, I have made some progress in stocking up on seeds for many of the vegetables I usually grow, however I know that may not be enough. I recently moved, and as I work to landscape my new yard, I am working on how I can work fruit trees and other items into my new yard.

DAY 9 Challenge:1-3, or 5 pts      For your day 9 challenge, we want you to think about your food sources. Have you identified ways of growing your own food and have you taken steps if needed? Even living in an apartment, there are ways to effectively grow a few vegetables. Do you can, freeze, preserve any of your own food? If not… we want you to research what options you may have.

Level Up: 5 pts For today’s level up… we want you to think about what other options you would have. Do you have skills to forage for food if needed? Do you have ways of identifying plants and knowing what is edible and what might be dangerous. Share with us what you use to identify plants and some foraging ideas. As always, pics and videos are more desired!!

Day 8: Someday Supplies.. Strategic Shopping

Featured

Hey Everyone, Eric here from the 30 Days with your Day 8 Challenge….

Most of us can still remember the images from 18 months ago when the COVID-19 stay home orders began, and the rush on certain items, that honestly made no sense. That item… Toilet Paper. We all know now as we did then, that this really made little sense since none of the symptoms of COVID would suggest this would be something that would be needed.

In the year since, we have had wildfires, winter severe storms, and record breaking heat events as well. Each time, we saw similar rushes that we have seen over and over in the past after other emergencies and disasters. Rushes for water, or toilet paper all highlight how easily our supply chains can be interrupted. Additionally now we are seeing the costs associated with many items going up!

This is also why we talk about keeping items on hand and buying one or two more of items you want to have as part of your preparedness kit a little here and a little there. Think about keeping on hand those “Someday Supplies” as phrased by a friend. That “someday” when there just might not be enough paycheck left at the end of the month. That “someday” when the kiddo’s need a new this or that, when you just finished shopping. That “someday” when the bad thing happens.

DAY 8 Challenge:1-3, or 5 pts    For your Day 8 Challenge, we want you to make a list of some staple items you think you would like to have on hand for emergencies and disasters. Share with us a picture of your list, with the goal of how much of each you would ideally like to keep on hand.

Level Up: 5 pts For today’s level up, we want you to take that list, and pull out the items you have on it. Share a picture or video of how much you have as well as sharing a plan of how you make sure you keep them stocked. When do you decide its time to buy or order more? How do you rotate to make sure they don’t expire? Finally share with us how long you think each item could last you in a disaster or emergency.

Find Allies:  Recruit friends and family members to play 30 Days, 30 Ways…. Challenge your family, your place of work or school, your place of worship, your neighborhood and your community to take the 30 Days challenge! Day 7: Back to Work

Featured

Ahhh The Tuesday after a long holiday weekend… Back to work.. or school we all go! As we settle back into our daily routines, we once again want you to think of those communities we mentioned last week. We can spend a lot of time away from our homes and where we keep a lot of our personal preparedness items. Today we want to talk about how prepared you may (or may not be) at work or school!

If you are one of the lucky ones who might be retired, or perhaps you work from home these days, think about another location you spend a lot of time… Switch up today’s challenge to meet you where you might be.

DAY 7 Challenge:1-3, or 5 pts    For today’s challenge we want you to share with what items you may have at work as part of your personal preparedness. Do you keep extra food, water, toiletry items, and a change of clothing? What other items do you possibly have at work?

Level Up: 5 pts For today’s Level up, we want to know about your place of works readiness. Are employees required to keep items in case of an emergency at their stations or in the building? If so how often do you review what you keep at the office? If your office does not require this, or you currently have no emergency supplies at your desk, how do you plan on remedying this in the future?

Day 6: Lets Get Physical

Featured

Hey Everyone, Its Eric from the 30 Days Gang, here with your Day 6 Challenge!!

One thing we can say about the past 18 months… It’s forced us to get creative, when it comes to trying to stay physically active. For most of year, gyms were closed across the country. Folks suddenly had to find new ways to find some physical activity. Sales online of fitness equipment spiked.. So did online workouts. Outdoor recreation locations became much more popular.

DAY 6 Challenge:1-3, or 5 pts    For today’s challenge, we want you to share with us, what activities you do to stay active. Has that changed in the last year or so?

Level Up: 5 pts For today’s level up, we want you to share with us some easy resources for someone who may be looking for a change… think about work out videos, or other tips and options you can share with someone who may be looking for a low cost effective way to become more physically active.

Day 5: Challenge Your Neighbors!

Featured

Hey Everyone, Eric here with your Day 5 Challenge.. On Thursday we talked about the different communities we all belong to, as well as the community we may find ourselves in if something bad were to happen. Today we want to build on that and talk about options in how to challenge your neighbors regarding personal preparedness.

DAY 5 Challenge:1-3, or 5 pts    For today’s challenge, we want you to commit to talking to 2 different neighbors and share with them about this challenge, as well as information about personal preparedness. Pretty simple…

Level Up: 5 pts For today’s level up, we want you to share with us what ideas you have to convince your neighbors about the importance of being personally prepared. Host a block party? Start a neighborhood watch? What other creative ideas might help others learn about personal preparedness? And think back to that challenge on Thursday about communities. Don’t just limit yourself to physical neighbors where you live. Think outside the box and come up with ideas to help transform our communities to be more resilient in the face of disasters and emergencies.

Day 4: Camping at Home

Featured

Hey Everyone, Eric here, with todays 30 Days challenge.

Summer Vacations have changed quite a bit in the past year. Triple A noticed a huge uptick in road trips. The RV industry had a resurgence as families looked for alternative options for hotel rooms and Airbnb rentals. National Parks continue to be packed as everyone looks at alternative options for vacations.

For sometime, when I talk about preparedness, I ask people to think of it as “Camping in your back yard” Rethink what you may already have, and think about how those items can be used in a disaster or emergency rather than buying a bunch of items just for that odd chance something happens.

DAY 4 Challenge:1-3, or 5 pts    For Your Day 4 Challenge, we want you think about camping in your backyard… or your living room if you live in an apartment. What items do you already have, that you think would be helpful in a disaster or emergency. Extra points if you take a picture or video with the items and explain their uses.

Level Up: 5 pts For Today’s level up, we want you choose one item from what you already have, and share with us… why this item is important to you and why you have it in your kit. (Extra Extra Bonus Points if you do this in a video.)

Find Allies:  Recruit friends and family members to play 30 Days, 30 Ways…. Challenge your family, your place of work or school, your place of worship, your neighborhood and your community to take the 30 Days challenge! Day 3: Loosen a Lug Nut

Featured

Wow… Today marks Labor Day weekend and the unofficial end of summer. Before you leave this weekend we want to talk about making sure your vehicle is prepared for that potentially long weekend road trip.

Even if you do not plan on traveling by car this weekend, this task is something that all car owners should know how to do.

DAY 3 Challenge:1-3, or 5 pts    For todays challenge, we want you to share a picture or video of you reviewing how to change a tire on your vehicle. Many vehicles these days have unconventional hiding spots to drop the spare tire if it’s underneath the vehicle, and the jacks can be difficult to understand. Spend a few minutes reviewing these and share with us the process of changing a tire.

For those that may not own a car, and use alternative methods of transportation, we want to hear what you keep with you in a “Go Preparedness Kit.” What items do you keep in your bag or on your person that would be helpful in an emergency if you found yourself not at home.

Level Up: 5 pts For today’s level up, we want you to create a short video about preparing your vehicle before you hit the road. Share what maintenance steps and things you may check before you leave.

Again, for those that do not use a car, share with us what “maintenance steps” you take before you travel. What items might you pack to make sure you have, or what steps might you take, if something were to happen while on vacation. Remember to keep it generic.. We do not need detailed information, but general ideas that may also help others!

Find Allies:  Recruit friends and family members to play 30 Days, 30 Ways…. Challenge your family, your place of work or school, your place of worship, your neighborhood and your community to take the 30 Days challenge! Day 2: Building Your Network – Who’s Your Community?

Featured

Hey Everyone, It’s Eric with the 30 Days gang here with your day 2 challenge. Several years back in a discussion about “diversity and inclusion” we started talking about all the “communities” one belongs to. We all belong on communities based on our ethnic and family backgrounds, the communities in which we live and work, the communities where we spend time, and well the community we will be part of when the bad thing might happen.

DAY 2 Challenge:1-3, or 5 pts    For today’s challenge, we want you to identify communities that you belong to… Share with us how many “communities” you belong to.

Level Up: 5 pts For today’s level up, we want you to think about how you can share preparedness, and this challenge with individuals within your communities. Think about how you all may need to rely on one another when the bad thing happens. Share with us your plan to connect with your communities.

Day 1: Who Are The Experts?

Featured

Hey Everyone, Welcome to 30 Days, 30 Ways 2021! Its Eric from the 30 Days Gang, here to get this year’s challenge started. Today we kick off our 12th year of this challenge. Last year I mentioned that many of the group that normally brings this challenge together had actively been involved with the COVID-19 response in our community since March of 2020. While some of the official activities surrounding our work related to COVID ended in July, it once again impacted many of the pieces leading up to this annual challenge. That said…we decided we still would once again bring you our annual challenge. This year with a focus on community. This year we want you to not only take the challenge personally, we want you to challenge the community around you… Your family, your work or school, your place of worship, your neighborhood, and yes, even your town or city!! So Let’s get started…

In today’s world information can feel like a fire hose, hitting us hard from every angle with different and conflicting messages. The media seems, like no matter which network has their own spin on what used to be just the facts. Conspiracy theories and so called Subject Matter Experts are everywhere. Even when it comes to emergency information, there can be “noise” everywhere.

DAY 1 Challenge:1-3, or 5 pts    So today we want to ask… How do you sift through all of this media noise to find the accurate information? How do you make sure you are getting a well rounded version of the truth. How do you find the information you need related to emergency notices?

Level Up: 5 pts For today’s level up… we want you to share your tips and tricks of finding verified sources. Where do you go to find the details.. How to you make sure what you see on Social Media or even in the news is accurate? This would also be a good time to connect with your local emergency manager or public health agency.. and let them know you are taking the 30 Days Challenge.
