Task 20: Unplugged

Featured

In today’s technology-centric society, we often take the power grid for granted. We presume that when we turn on the lights, they will work. What if power was lost for an extended period of time? Have you considered how reliant you are on the assumption of power?

Task 19: Don’t Flush It!

Featured

As I was cleaning out a cupboard the other day, I ran across some prescription medication for one of my dogs. I knew it was out of date without even looking at it because the dog died six years ago. When was the last time you cleaned out your medicine cabinet?

Time passes quickly and that cold medicine or prescription you have actually expired three years ago. While it may not be toxic, it may have lost some of its potency, which means that the next time you need it, it might have little or no effect.

DAY 19 Challenge:1-3, or 5 pts    Tell us of some safe ways to dispose of unneeded or out of date medication. (Hint: it’s not pouring them down the sink or flushing them down the toilet!)

Level Up: 5 pts Provide us with a screen shot or link to a flyer for an upcoming Medicine Take-Back location in your area.

DAY 18 Challenge:1-3, or 5 pts    We want to know if you’ve ever taken a First Aid, CPR or othe safety course (even if you are currently expired). Extra points if, even if you are expired, you commit to updating your First Aid/CPR or other safety course qualifications.

Task 15: On the Go

Featured

A few years ago we were warned about a winter snowstorm due to hit our area around 3:00 in the afternoon. Unfortunately, most people didn’t take it very seriously, and later, many were forced to abandon their vehicles on the side of the road. Others struggled to drive home, battling not only the usual heavy traffic but also the miserable weather. It took a friend nearly nine hours to travel what was usually a 45 to 60-minute commute.

Because we don’t know where we’ll be when an emergency happens, it’s important to keep some basic supplies in your vehicle.

DAY 15 Challenge:1-3, or 5 pts    List four items you have (or will include) in your car kit. If you don’t commute by automobile, tell us what you carry with you every day, and how you transport it.

Task 14: Let Me Entertain You

Featured

My husband and son have been playing a lot of Trivial Pursuit over the past few weeks and it’s been fun to listen to them while I’m working on my computer. I’m amazed at the obscure, random bits of knowledge my son has, and while my husband may not be able to answer the questions I can, he is much better at some of the topics I can only guess at.

From cable tv to on-line movies and computer games, a lot of our entertainment revolves around the internet. It’s refreshing to hear people talk about family game nights, to see people reading actual books or playing cards.

DAY 14 Challenge:1-3, or 5 pts    What type of entertainment have you included in your emergency kit that doesn’t require any electrical or battery power? Share a photo highlighting the different options.

Level Up: 5 pts What type of activities could include four or more people? Describe items that could be used to engage a group.

Task 13: Shelter “In Place”

Featured

People are often asked to shelter in place during an emergency or when a disaster happens. In 2018, the wildfires in Alaska, California, and Canada produced such massive amounts of heavy, dark smoke that the health and well-being of hundreds of people were impacted.

DAY 13 Challenge:1-3, or 5 pts    If you were told to shelter in place for health reasons, what are the top five things you would need to do this? Share a photo of your supplies.

Level Up: 5 pts Identify the room in your house that is best suited for this purpose. What modifications would you need to make to increase the security of this space?

Task 12: Copy That!

Featured

We’ve seen it happen over and over. After the tornadoes, the floods, the hurricanes, and the earthquakes, getting financial help to the victims takes time. Having your personal information readily available will help to expedite the process.

DAY 12 Challenge:1-3, or 5 pts    For today’s challenge, we want you to identify your “important records”. (Share only general, non-identifying information, please.) Tell us how you are storing them.

Level Up: 5 pts If you close your eyes and try to list everything in your home by memory, you will find it to be a nearly impossible task. For insurance purposes, it’s important to also document your personal possessions. Add photos or videos of your possessions to your “important documents” and tell us what version you have chosen – photo, video, or a list .

Task 11: Thank You – 9/11 Tribute

Featured

Today marks the anniversary of the 9/11 Attacks. Today also marks Patriots Day in honor of those who not only lost their lives on that September day, but also for the thousands of First Responders who worked on the response and recovery. Some who have since lost their lives due to their exposure to the sights of those attacks. While we can never repay them for their brave heroic efforts, we can show our gratitude for what they did.

As we reflect on that day, I remember stories first hand captured by cell phones. For many, these devices became lifelines to connect with loved ones. With our dependency today on these devices, we thought it was a perfect opportunity to talk about how to make your cell phone your No. 1 safety tool. I have a back up battery pack on my phone… I carry a back up battery, inside the case I can hide emergency money. I have added contact info to my screensaver. I also have several apps on my phone…

DAY 11 Challenge:1-3, or 5 pts    We want you to share some of the ways you can make your phone your No. 1 Safety Tool.. Do you carry back up power? What apps do you have? What other items have you added or downloaded onto your phone that you can share.

Level Up: 5 pts We want you to find ways to not only pay tribute to the memory of those lost on 9/11, but also find a way to thank a local first responder in your area. Think about how you can make that “Thank You” personal. It’s easy to post a comment online or even send a thank you note. For Today’s level up, we want you to find a more lasting and personal way to thank local First Responders for what they do each and every day..

Find Allies:  Recruit friends and family members to play 30 Days, 30 Ways…. Build Your Network!!  Each day a person you recruit completes a 30 Days 30 Ways task, your points double for that days task. The more individuals you convince to play, the more points you can earn for each days challenge.
