TASK 30: Your Turn

Congratulations! You have made it to Day 30 of an intense month full of fun and personal challenge.

If you have played in the game, read the tasks or even just talked about them with your friends, coworkers and loved ones, you have supported the spirit and goal of this preparedness game.

As you know, many of these tasks were brainstormed by the hard-working emergency management staff at the Clark Regional Emergency Services Agency.

But we thought the final day should belong to you…..if you were challenging your peers to personal preparedness tasks, what would YOU ask them to do?  Your task today is to design a task as if you were running a game like this.

THIS TASK WILL BE WORTH 4 POINTS

You will earn 2 points for creating a #30Days30Ways task with instructions.  An additional point will be earned for tasks that have not previously been included in either the 2010 or 2011 games.  And a 4th point will be awarded to tasks that we would choose to include in a future game.  (We would credit you, of course, if we do use the idea in the future!)

If you are receiving your tasks via email, go to www.30days30ways.com to enter your answers.

TASK 29: Are You Pre-Affiliated?

We are two days away from the finale of 30 Days, 30 Ways. The second to last task is simple. Where are you volunteering in your community?

THIS TASK IS WORTH 2 P0INTS

You will earn your two points if you are already pre-affiliated with a volunteer organization.

This is important to your community because after your family is determined to be okay, you need to know where to report.

So, tell us where you will serve?  It’s easy.  If you are not affiliated, tell us where you anticipate where you will help your local community.  If you are receiving these game tasks via email, go to www.30days30ways.com to fill in your answers.

TASK 28: What’s Your Guilty Pleasure?

When we talk about emergency preparedness kits, you’ll hear some people talk about storing MRE’s (meals ready to eat), but if you are truly thinking ahead, there will likely be an item or two that brings you comfort during times of crisis that others might classify as an indulgence.

Today, we want to know about the most unusual item in your emergency preparedness kit. It doesn’t have to be a food item, but name one item that will bring you personal comfort or that others might consider an indulgence.

We’ll share a couple of our personal favorites: chocolate-covered coffee beans, a special flannel blanket and M&M’s.

THIS TASK IS WORTH ONE POINT

You will receive one point for answering the basic question of this task.  This is an “easy day.”  Remember, if you are receiving your tasks via email, go to www.30days30ways.com to fill in your answer.

TASK 27: How Many Ways Can You Purify Water?

We have talked about water storage, but what if you don’t have access to what you have in storage.

Can you identify more than one way to purify water?

TODAY’S TASK IS WORTH 3 POINTS

You will earn one point for every method you can identify for purifying water, up to 3 total.  We realize that there may be more ways that exist, but three count for today.

If you are receiving your tasks via email, go to www.30days30ways.com to fill in your answers.

TASK 26: Active Shooters

Today, we’re going to tackle a topic no one really wants to think about. What would you do if you found yourself in an environment where someone with a weapon was actively shooting those around him or her?

In recent years, active shooters have occurred on school campuses, churches, places of employment and even everyday grocery stores. You never know when your circumstances may find you in a place with an active threat.

It is important to consider how you would respond in every type of hazard scenario and practice that response or talk about it with family members who might be with you on a day such as this.

THIS TASK IS WORTH 2 POINTS

You will earn two points today for sharing how you would respond to this situation. There is not specifically a right or wrong answer to this scenarios and much conflicting guidance at times about what way is the best.

There are a couple of keys issues that are important no matter how you think you would initially react:

  • What does your gut say?
  • Listen to the guidance of your emergency responders when they get on scene.

TASK 25: Duck, Cover & Hold On

It’s Sunday, so it’s going to be pretty easy today. We know it’s the weekend, but here is a skill that can always use some practice…..yes, you guessed it from the title.

Today’s task is all about practicing for earthquakes.

As you read this message, look around you and figure out how you could duck under something study and hold on until the walls stopped shaking.

Remember, in a subduction zone earthquake like we will likely have here in the Pacific NW, the walls could shake for several minutes. The biggest risk to your life, during violent shaking, are the things that fall off walls, glass that shatters and other items that turn into projectiles.

THIS TASK WILL BE WORTH 3 POINTS

You will earn 1 point for ducking and covering.  Another point for identifying at least one other location in the room you are in for a coworker or family member to duck.  And a 3rd point if you submit a picture from your ducking experience.  As in previous tasks, you need not show your face, but we should be able to tell from the perspective that this picture is from under something.

Remember, if you are receiving this via email, go to www.30days30ways.com to submit your answers.

TASK 24: Renewable Energy

You’ve heard the term “renewable energy” in the context of being energy efficient, but what does it mean to disaster preparedness folks?

Today, we’re offering an easy checklist to determine your readiness to renew your local energy sources.

THIS TASK IS WORTH UP TO 7 POINTS

You will receive one point for each of the ways that you have currently to keep your power going during a time of crisis.

Remember, if you are receiving this task via email, head to www.30days30ways.com to answer today’s task.

TASK 23: Doctor, Doctor

In an area that is faced with a significant disaster, hospitals could become easily overcrowded with patients who are in significant need of help.

This means that your ability to receive medical attention could be very limited. Consider how prepared and trained you are to help yourself and your loved ones.

THIS TASK IS WORTH 6 POINTS

You will receive one point for telling us about your medical training and what is in your emergency kits to protect wounds, provide treatment, preventative therapies, on-going care, and diagnose medical issues.

Remember, if you are receiving this task via email, go to www.30days30ways.com to answer the questions.

TASK 22: Ready To Wear

We spend a fair amount of time considering our clothing for different seasons, but have you ever considered your wardrobe for its ability to weather disasters?

Today’s task wants you to think about doing an inventory of your clothing and those of your household.

THIS TASK WILL BE WORTH UP TO 6 POINTS

You will receive one point for every of the following types of clothing that you own currently:

  • Rugged clothing,
  • Boots,
  • Clothing for warmth (like thermal clothes),
  • Rain Gear,
  • Spare Boot Laces and
  • The ability to mend your clothing

Remember, if you are receiving these tasks via email, go to www.30days30ways.com to answer the task.

TASK 21: Go or Stay?

Creative Commons via Kirsty Hall on FlicKr

This was the most popular task of the 2010 game. We still hear people talk about this task and feel that it is of great importance to being prepared.

Think about a location that you frequent regularly. This could be your workplace, school, church, grocery store or any location that you visit often. If your community experienced a significant earthquake and all of the bridges and overpasses were shut down for an extended period of time to be assessed for damage, would you have a way to get home?

THIS TASK IS WORTH 3 POINTS

  • You will earn 1 point for planning your route home from your most frequently visited location in your community after an earthquake.
  • Two bonus points will be awarded if you can make it all the way home without crossing over any bridges or under any overpasses OR for identifying a location near your frequently visited location where you could stay until bridges and overpasses were inspected and passable.
