Task 12: I’ll Give You…..

Featured

Hey Everyone, Its Eric from the 30 Days Gang,

I don’t know if I have ever met anyone who doesn’t like a good bargain. In my lifetime I’ve known some folks that can haggle like no other to get the price down… Either at a garage sale, or buying a car.

But I often think back to times when we were not so dependent on money and our debit cards. Growing up on a farm, I remember my family exchanging items for items… no money involved. During a catastrophic emergency, when we may not have power, certain ways that we normally do business my not be available.

In our neighborhoods, while some may have plenty of supplies, others may have skills that are useful. Bartering for that exchange will be critical to get things done.

DAY 12 Challenge:1-3, or 5 pts    For your Day 12 challenge, we want you to think about what type of items or skills you would be able to offer during a disaster or emergency if paper money was not easily available.

Level Up: 5 pts For today’s level up, we want you to talk with at least two neighbors. Let them know you are taking the 30 Days Challenge and come up with skills or products you could barter between you to help your block together.

Find Allies:  Recruit friends and family members to play 30 Days, 30 Ways…. Build Your Network!!  Each day a person you recruit completes a 30 Days 30 Ways task, your points double for that days task. The more individuals you convince to play, the more points you can earn for each days challenge.

Task 11: A Tribute

Featured

Today marks the anniversary of the 9/11 Attacks. Today also marks Patriots Day in honor of those who not only lost their lives on that September day, but also for the thousands of First Responders who worked on the response and recovery. Some who have since lost their lives due to their exposure to the sights of those attacks. While we can never repay them for their brave heroic efforts, we can show our gratitude for what they did.

As we reflect on that day, I remember stories first hand captured by cell phones. For many, these devices became lifelines to connect with loved ones. With our dependency today on these devices, we thought it was a perfect opportunity to talk about how to make your cell phone your No. 1 safety tool. I have a back up battery pack on my phone… I carry a back up battery, inside the case I can hide emergency money. I have added contact info to my screensaver. I also have several apps on my phone…

DAY 11 Challenge:1-3, or 5 pts    We want you to share some of the ways you can make your phone your No. 1 Safety Tool.. Do you carry back up power? What apps do you have? What other items have you added or downloaded onto your phone that you can share.

Level Up: 5 pts We want you to find ways to not only pay tribute to the memory of those lost on 9/11, but also find a way to thank a local first responder in your area. Think about how you can make that “Thank You” personal. It’s easy to post a comment online or even send a thank you note. For Today’s level up, we want you to find a more lasting and personal way to thank local First Responders for what they do each and every day..

Find Allies:  Recruit friends and family members to play 30 Days, 30 Ways…. Build Your Network!!  Each day a person you recruit completes a 30 Days 30 Ways task, your points double for that days task. The more individuals you convince to play, the more points you can earn for each days challenge.

Task 9: Do You Know Your?

Featured

Hey Everyone, Its Eric from the 30 Days Gang, here with your Day 9 Challenge!

One of the biggest revelations from this year for me was the lack of prep in regards to seeds and growing my own food. I realized that while I grow a garden each year, and freeze and can a little of my own food, I was totally unprepared for having plant starts for this year. As we entered spring, I found it difficult to find the plants I was looking for in the normal fashions, as well that made me feel safe.

It got me thinking about if I needed to grow my own food, what would I do? I realized I needed to start thinking about having some seeds on hand and come up with a better plan to starting and growing my own food.

DAY 9 Challenge:1-3, or 5 pts    For your day 9 challenge, we want you to think about your food sources. Have you identified ways of growing your own food and have you taken steps if needed? Even living in an apartment, there are ways to effectively grow a few vegetables. Do you can, freeze, preserve any of your own food? If not… we want you to research what options you may have.

Level Up: 5 pts For today’s level up… we want you to think about what other options you would have. Do you have skills to forage for food if needed? Do you have ways of identifying plants and knowing what is edible and what might be dangerous. Share with us what you use to identify plants and some foraging ideas. As always, pics and videos are more desired!!

Find Allies:  Recruit friends and family members to play 30 Days, 30 Ways…. Build Your Network!!  Each day a person you recruit completes a 30 Days 30 Ways task, your points double for that days task. The more individuals you convince to play, the more points you can earn for each days challenge.

Task 6: Your Own Hazard

Featured

Hey Everyone, Eric from the 30 Days Gang, here with your Day 6 Challenge.

If you look at Ready.Gov, one of the first things they tell ya.. is “Make a Kit, Make a Plan” and while I think these are important steps… I think we often overlook an important first piece…. How can you make a kit or make a plan, if you don’t know what hazards you may have in your area? What risks might you face when it comes to an emergency or disaster?

In past years, we always focused on those natural and human caused disasters or emergencies….those catastrophes.. like we see in the disaster movies. But who had on their disaster Bingo card, a pandemic that would keep us locked in our homes for months? I know I missed the mark on that one… While many of the items I had stocked up on, kept me comfortable in my home, it also made me realize we have many hazards around our homes that we often overlook and don’t think about… from an extension chord that has too many things plugged in, to tripping and fall hazards and even potential poisons within our homes.

DAY 6 Challenge:1-3, or 5 pts    For your Day 6 Challenge, we want you you to go on a hazard hunt… in your home. Share with us what you may have found, and actions you can take to minimize or remove those hazards. Take a pic or video to share with others. No shaming here, and you may help someone else make their homes safer.

Level Up: 5 pts For Today’s level up.. we want you to step outside your home, and look at the neighborhood around you. What risks or potential hazards are within walking distance of your home? For instance, in my neighborhood, there is a small power transfer station within 3 blocks of my home. Share with us and draw a generic map of your neighborhood to share with us your neighborhood hazards!

Find Allies:  Recruit friends and family members to play 30 Days, 30 Ways…. Build Your Network!!  Each day a person you recruit completes a 30 Days 30 Ways task, your points double for that days task. The more individuals you convince to play, the more points you can earn for each days challenge.

Task 5: Make the Right Call

Featured

Hey Everyone, Eric Again with your Day 5 Challenge.

I would like to introduce you all to Emery the Penguin… Emery is our 9-1-1 mascot here at Clark Regional Emergency Services Agency to help us teach about the importance of calling 9-1-1 in our community. Since I came to work at CRESA 9-1-1 several years back, I’ve had the opportunity to work side by side with many 9-1-1 Dispatchers. Talk about cool under pressure… as they deal with people on their worst days.

Many times over the years I have been asked about why dispatchers ask the questions they did “when I just told them this.” The answer is that’s how they are trained.. there are protocols they must follow, and those questions are there for a purpose.. to help slow down the caller enough that the dispatcher can get the information they need to get the right help on the way to them as quickly as possible.

As I teach about calling 9-1-1, I’ve heard the rumors and myths about if you use certain “code phrases” the dispatcher will “know what that means” and be able to send help. I’ve also witnessed a lot of calls that truly should never have been a 9-1-1 call. Too many times when people do not know who to call, 9-1-1 becomes the default. I also recently learned that in some other cultures, its customary to call the equivalent of 9-1-1 to verify emergency information they have heard.

DAY 5 Challenge:1-3, or 5 pts    For your Day 5 Challenge… It’s really easy… Tell us what you would call 9-1-1 for… Make sure you have something posted easily in your home with this number as well as your address and if you have small children, your names. Make sure everyone in the household is aware of the information.

Level Up: 5 pts For your Level up.. We want you to think about those calls that, well may require assistance but are not an emergency situation requiring calling 9-1-1. For today’s level up, we want you to locate those non-emergency numbers in your community, and make sure they are available as well. Share with us a quick pic of your list for your community.

Find Allies:  Recruit friends and family members to play 30 Days, 30 Ways…. Build Your Network!!  Each day a person you recruit completes a 30 Days 30 Ways task, your points double for that days task. The more individuals you convince to play, the more points you can earn for each days challenge.

Task 4: How Long Can You Eat

Featured

Hey Everyone, Its Eric from the 30 Days Gang, here with your Day 4 challenge…

Over the years as we talk about preparedness, we have always urged folks about having some sort of stockpile of food. From 3 Days, to 2 weeks, there has always been a goal of having food on hand. As someone who teaches preparedness, my goal has been to make this not sound as some daunting task. For instance… I encourage folks to eat thru their pantry and rotate items rather than buying a fancy bucket with freeze dried food with a ten year life span. We also teach, in an emergency when power is lost, to eat what is in your refrigerator first… then your freezer, before getting into your dried goods.

Today we want to challenge you to think about the food you have on hand, and how long it will last you…

DAY 4 Challenge:1-3, or 5 pts    For your day 4 challenge we want you to… take a look in your freezers.. and give us an estimate of how many days you can eat with what you have on hand.. Make sure you share pics or videos what you may have in your freezers and refrigerators..

Level Up: 5 pts For today’s level up, we want you to see how well you can do.. We want to challenge you to only cook and eat with what you have on hand for the next three days. Check back on Monday and let us know how you did.. Extra points if you share any recipes you develop with just the ingredients you have on hand.

Find Allies:  Recruit friends and family members to play 30 Days, 30 Ways…. Build Your Network!!  Each day a person you recruit completes a 30 Days 30 Ways task, your points double for that days task. The more individuals you convince to play, the more points you can earn for each days challenge.
