TASK 14: Who’s Fault Is It Anyway?

Creative Commons via KirstyHall on FlicKr

Today, we’re asking you to consider which earthquake fault line is closest to you. With a number of large earthquakes in the past year which have rocked Christchurch, New Zealand, Japan, Haiti, and Chile, it is not outside the realm of possibility that each of us will experience an earthquake in our lifetimes.

But, do you know which earthquake fault line is closest to you?

TODAY’S TASK IS WORTH 3 POINTS

You will earn one point for finding the fault line closest to you.  And for 2 bonus points, identify the type of earthquake that is likely to do the most damage to you.

Here are some helpful webpage to get you started on today’s quest:

TASK 13: Hell’s Kitchen

Creative Commons via KirstyHall on FlicKr

We couldn’t let all of the tasks be easy. If you’ve been playing along so far, you’ve had a pretty simple challenge so far on each of the daily questions.

But now, we want to challenge your thinking just a little bit further. We want you to wander into your food storage and be a little creative.

Using at least 3 shelf-stable ingredients, we want to see a creative recipe for something edible and tasty.

THIS TASK IS WORTH UP TO 6 TOTAL POINTS.

You will receive one point per ingredient in your submitted recipe (up to 5 total points….your recipe can have as many shelf-stable ingredients as you want).  A 6th point will be awarded to the recipe that is determined to be the tastiest by a panel of independent reviewers.

Submitted recipes will be posted on a separate page on this website after September 30th.  Remember, if you are receiving this game via email, please go to www.30days30ways.com to enter your answers.

TASK 12: All Fired Up

Creative Commons via KirstyHall

Today, we’re talking about fire alarms. Did you know that there are 2 different types of fire alarms?

One type of alarm is an ionization detection alarm (which means that it is faster at seeing open flame) and photoelectric-sensing (which means that it sees smoke).

Both types of alarms are effective, but are different in how they detect a fire hazard.  And regardless of what type of alarm you have, they should be replaced every 10 years to be sure that it will function effectively when you need it.

TODAY’S TASK IS WORTH UP TO 5 POINTS

  • You will earn 1 point for knowing what type of fire alarm you have in your home.
  • You will earn 2 points if you have replaced your fire alarms within the past 10 years.
  • You will earn 1 point if you have changed the batteries within the past year.
  • You will earn 1 point for testing your smoke detectors to be sure that they are working.

TASK 11: A Meaty Matter

In special tribute, today’s post was launched at 9:59 EST which recalls the fall of the South Tower of the World Trade Center. We will never forget and we honor the fallen.  May those who gave their lives inspire us to be ready to face crisis both prepared and without fear.

This week’s challenges are going to focus on food & sustenance.  Here in Vancouver, Washington, one of our local traditions is called the Vancouver Sausage Festival which is also underway this weekend.  It is the inspiration for today’s task about protein sources.

Consider for a moment if you were without power and had to rely on your emergency food supplies.  Many of the shelf-stable products are high in preservatives, but often low in protein.  Today, we want to know what protein sources you ensure are always on hand in your emergency food supplies.

TODAY’S TASK IS WORTH UP TO 3 POINTS

You will earn one point for each protein source that you currently store in your emergency supply kits.

TASK 10: Time to Remember

This weekend marks the 10-year anniversary of 9/11/2001 and commemoration events are occurring all over the United States and across the world.

Because “time to remember, time to prepare” is the theme for National Preparedness Month, we’d be remiss in not having a task that causes us to remember.

TODAY’S TASK IS WORTH UP TO 4 POINTS

You will earn 1 point for sharing one of your key memories of 9/11/01.  And, an additional 3 bonus points are available for attending an event that honors public safety, preparedness or commemorates 9/11/01.  For the sake of community, we all share a responsibility in encouraging preparedness, respect and a constant state of vigilance.

If you are a player who is local to SW Washington, a helpful list of community activities has already been posted on the CRESA Blog at this location so your points should be pretty easy to obtain today!

TASK 9: See Something, Say Something

Over the past few months, the Department of Homeland Security started the “See Something, Say Something” campaign.  This effort seeks to encourage people everywhere to report more suspicious behaviors to local authorities.

It is often through the alert reporting of citizens that terrorist plots are interrupted and lives saved.  But it isn’t always easy to report suspicious activities because we often second guess ourselves or wonder if it is the right thing to do.

TODAY’S TASK IS WORTH 2 POINTS

Today, we want to know what you would report.  What makes an activity suspicious enough to call?  And, for a bonus point, identify where this can be reported, other than 9-1-1.

If you are reading this task via email, go to www.30days30ways.com to report your answer.

TASK 8: Being Ready In Transit

Creative Commons via FreeFoto.com

Emergencies unfortunately don’t always happen when we are safely in our homes.  Sometimes they happen when we are on the road.

Whether you are driving or taking public transportation, today’s task wants to know how ready you are to face uncertain crises while on the move.

Share with us what is in your car and what you carry on your person while on the move.  Bonus points are available today for describing what people should carry in their cars and on their person to be more ready to face the unthinkable.

TODAY’S TASK IS WORTH 4 POINTS

  • Point #1 is available for telling us what is currently in your vehicle that illustrates your preparedness
  • Point #2 is for telling us what you carry on your person that contributes to your readiness to help yourself or others during an emergency
  • Point #3 is for telling us what SHOULD BE in everyone’s vehicle
  • Point #4 is for sharing a recommendation of what people should carry on their person at all times

Remember, if you receive this via email, go to www.30days30ways.com in order to answer this task.

TASK 7: What Scares You?

Creative Commons via FlicKr KirstyHall

While we can often talk about large “disaster scenarios,” it is much easier to plan when you are realistic and know what you are facing as you face the world each day.

Today, we want to know about the hazards that concern you most. What are the top 3 likely life-altering hazards that you will face where you live?  And more importantly, why do these hazard scenarios concern you specifically?

It is one thing to say that a 7.0 magnitude earthquake will crumble a few streets on your way to work and a very different other thing to realize that the ground beneath your home may liquefy if you sit in a soil liquefaction zone.

THIS TASK IS WORTH UP TO THREE POINTS

  • You will receive one point for each hazard scenario that you identify and describe why you feel you are at risk to be affected from this hazard.

Remember, if you receive the daily email, please enter your answers on www.30days30ways.com.  Also, we have a new page on the website that brings all of the tasks together onto one page.  So, if you are a few days behind, you can easily catch up by checking out:  http://www.30days30ways.com/daily-task-links/

TASK 6: Looking for Multiple Purposes

Creative Commons via Wired.com

Ingenuity can be key to solving problems when disaster strikes. You are forced to manage with the things you have on hand, in your vehicle or possibly in your office. For today’s task, we want to hear about an everyday item that can serve more than one purpose.

For example, a pen can be a great writing instrument, but the point can also be used to open taped up boxes or Meals Ready to Eat.

THIS TASK IS WORTH 2 POINTS TODAY

  • Point #1 will be achieved by telling us what the object is and it’s two or more purposes.
  • Point #2 will be available for those who share their multipurpose tool on the 30 Days, 30 Ways Facebook Page, on Twitter using the #30Days30Ways hashtag or on any other social media platform of your choosing.

TASK 5: It’s “LABOR” Day

Creative Commons via FlicKr KirstyHall

Today is a national holiday in the United States called “Labor Day” and yet for many, this will be, ironically, a day off work.

But in thinking about emergency preparedness, there is no rest allowed.  Your loved ones may need you to be physically fit in order help them survive.

While we may not like to hear this, evidence shows that the people more likely to survive a disaster are those who exercise and keep their bodies in shape to the best of their abilities.

So, today’s task is physical.  Go for a walk, jog, play some basketball.  Do something to improve your personal health.

THIS TASK IS WORTH 1 POINT (Hey, it’s a holiday, remember?)
