Task 6: Watta Watta Watta

images (21)Water….  In the past we have talked to you about how much water each person should have on hand, (1 gallon per person per day) and challenged you to identify some different sources for emergency water.  I will never forget the conversation regarding the toilet tank and draining the hot water heater… ( thanks TinFoilT), but have we talked about the shelf life of water?  Does it have a shelf life?  What about if its exposed to extreme heat or cold? Does the container make a difference?

Task 5: Have You Met Me??

images (20)In most communities and counties across this country it is the Emergency Manager who has the role of  preparing for, mitigating against, recovering from, educating about hazards and potential disasters.  Emergency Managers can be located in several different areas of local government from its own department to an individual in Public Works or under the Fire Chief.

No matter where they may be located, emergency managers do their best to engage their communities regarding disaster preparedness, and each year we ask you to find your local emergency manager.  This year is no different, but with a different twist.  (Oh and this could take you a few days to arrange to gather your task proof!)

Task 3: Right Here in the Middle of a Traffic Jam

images (18)In today’s fast past world, many of us spend countless hours sitting in our vehicles as we commute, travel, and just to run errands.  Each year we see stories of folks stuck in their vehicles for hours due to accidents, severe weather, and even trying to evacuate an area.  If you happened to be one of those sitting for hours or more, would you be prepared?  Do you have what you need to survive the long haul?

DAY 3 ACTIVITY:

Task 2: Map It!!

images (17)Maps are a part of our daily lives even if we don’t actually even realize it.  Although many folks today do not actually carry a map with them, we use maps daily in a majority of the apps we use. From Google Maps to Wise, even Social Media apps like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram use locations within your phone to identify your neighborhood vicinity. This summer we saw this play out even more in the Pokemon Go.  This got our attention and we can’t wait to see where this technology takes us and how it can be used possibly in disasters.  With all the online apps and technology we have, maps are an important role in your emergency plan, and apps do not replace the need to have them available.   Maps will always play an important role and we encourage you to have a paper copy just in case.  map it

DAY 2 ACTIVITY:

2 Pts: Use your favorite mapping program to find the nearest fire dept, police dept, and hospital.  Identify how far away you may be from each and how many potential bridges, overpass’ etc you would have to cross to get there.  Map and collect those locations for your emergency kit in both digital and paper form.

Bonus:  Use same program to locate potential evacuation routes if needed. Draw these out or mark on a paper map to add to your emergency kit.  Be sure to add important phone numbers of marked locations.

Task 1: History Lesson

images (45)Today we kick off National Preparedness month all across the United States. It also marks our 7th annual #30Days30Ways Preparedness Challenge.  As this month progress’, we Don’t Want You To Be Scared, But Be Prepared!  Over the past several months we have seen topic after topic that has driven home that putting off preparing for an emergency till tomorrow.  The entire reason behind the #30Days30Ways concept was to change behaviors toward preparedness.  This year we want you to help us in spreading the word and starting a conversation about how simple it can be to start becoming better prepared.  It doesn’t need to be something scary and overwhelming. It’s a change in how we look at things, and can be built upon.   As someone who talks about this subject on a daily basis, its hard for me to not go anywhere without seeing a sign that reminds me in some way of the importance of being prepared.  Little signs of past emergencies and disasters not only can remind us of the hazards but small steps we can take to be ready for the next potential disaster.

Don't Be

DAY 1 ACTIVITY:

2 Pts: Find and share an article about a Disaster (In your area if possible) that happened before 1985.

How This Game Got Started

The 30 Days, 30 Ways Preparedness Challenge fun got started in 2010.

That Summer, the Clark Regional Emergency Services Agency hosted a summer book club on Amanda Ripley’s book, The Unthinkable.  This book is an incredible read as it describes a number of “disaster personalities” and the way people respond during crisis situations.  Ms. Ripley challenges traditional emergency preparedness recommendations and suggests that disaster resilience is a set of behaviors that include awareness, meditation, flexible thinking and good health.

During the course of our summer book club, the messages shared among participants was loud and clear.  Emergency Managers spend a great deal of time preaching the preparedness message, but never listen to whether the community is actually preparing.

Simultaneously, the guy in the picture up there? He was hosting a social media game called “Spot the Ham Sandwich” in which he posted a reference to ham somewhere on either his website, Facebook Fan Page or on his Twitter profile.  Now, Jason Hillard works with mortgage loans and I wasn’t in the market for a loan.  But in playing in his online game and seeking out his daily hidden clue, I learned more about loans of all varieties.

On August 31st, the day before the start of the 2010 National Preparedness Month, it struck me driving to work……what if we asked people to actually complete preparedness tasks and made it fun?  Could it work?  Would people engage?

30 days later, we had over 600 preparedness tasks completed by over 80 participants.  The message was clear to us.  We just had to ask.  In the coming days, we’ll share more about that experience and the specific statistics.  But tonight we want to ask……are you willing to engage and do just one thing each day in September.

There will be a number of ways to get game information:

A Little About #30Days30Ways

September is the 12th Annual National Preparedness Month which means that public safety agencies are busy working on a number of events to ensure that their communities are educated, informed and ready to face any type of crisis situation.
This year, CRESA will find many heroes by launching its huge online social media game called the 30 Days, 30 Ways Preparedness Challenge which has its own website at www.30days30ways.com.
Keep Calm Get Prepared
Being prepared for emergencies should be as common as wearing your seatbelt, and yet nearly every emergency preparedness survey conducted over the past 10 years indicates that 40-80% of people are unprepared to face certain hazards.
Clark Regional Emergency Services Agency (CRESA) created this 30-day contest in September 2010 and have, in the last 5 years, recorded the completion of over 18,000 readiness tasks from players in 44 states and 38 countries.
Players will be given a daily challenge at 7:00 a.m. PDT each morning.  Players may submit replies to each of the tasks involved prior to midnight on Sept 30th  through either Facebook, Twitter, the Blog or Email.  Players can choose to play as many days as they would like throughout the month.  All tasks will be short and will not require a significant amount of time to complete.CRESA’s primary goal is for people to share information about emergency preparedness, on social media, to reach people who may not otherwise think about being ready for disasters.
Through sharing and re-sharing information, it is vital for people to think about these interesting themes. This game sparks great conversations and is a wonderful platform for neighborhoods, scouts, schools and workplaces to use to consider how ready you are to “be your own hero!”
